Significant Releases

Dead Space 2 (PC / PS3 / 360)

Developer: Visceral Games (Dead Space, Dante's Inferno)
Publisher: EA Games

Space is dead, again. Three years after the events which occurred on the Ishimura, players once again control miner Issac Clarke, who after being afflicted by the mysterious alien marker, is suffering increasingly with the resulting mental illness. The game takes place on the Sprawl, a highly-populated city built on Titan, one of Jupiter's Moons, and unfortunately for the inhabitants, the necromorphs enter the civilization and begin to wreak havoc across the civilization. The game is similar to the first adventure, although new monsters and antagonists are introduced. Furthermore, a multiplayer mode is also introduced with this game, in which players join the humans or the necromorphs for team-versus-team missions. The Playstation 3 Limited Edition comes with Dead Space: Extraction, a light-gun shooter prequel to the original Dead Space.

Two Worlds II (PC / PS3 / 360)

The game takes place some five years after the first, in which the hero of the first title has been taken prisoner by the forces of evil and his twin is now under an evil spell. When all hope seems lost, he is freed by a rescue team comprised of Orcs, and now from the clutches of evil, he must figure out why the Orcs are helping him, learn of their new master, and save his sister once again.

Significant Releases

LittleBigPlanet 2 (PS3)

Developer: Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet)
Publisher: Sony

No longer is LittleBigPlanet a platform game. It is now a platform for games! Developer Media Molecule has built onto the game engine so much that now players can create gameplay modes completely new to the game series. Players can explore the game's Story mode and learn from the development team itself, and then take those ideas and turn them into something wicked! Objects and creatures can be programmed by multiple items added into the game, and with all the additional content tossed in, players can create shooters, overhead adventures, racing games, multiplayer battles, and much more. For those who want to truly demonstrate creativity in level creation, this game will inspire them for years to come.

MindJack (PS3 / 360)

Developer: feelplus (Lost Odyssey, Ninety-Nine Nights II)

In the year 2031, government control is in disarray and organizations and corruption fill the gap. Players assume the role of a rogue team who have learned that the corruption is so great that the technology the corporations are creating could devastate humanity's future. The game appears to be a normal third-person shooter, but the main characters have the ability to mindjack, that is, control other people around them in order to help in firefights or complete tasks stealthily. Players may also join into other players' single-player experiences as helpful non-playable characters or as part of the enemy, providing a "Demon's Souls" twist to the game's online community.

Well, either way, DC Universe Online brings those people together in a big, cross-platform MMO adventure! In this game, many humans have become metahumans thanks to small exobytes formed by Brainiac in the future and taken back to the present-day thanks to a future Lex Luthor. Players choose to be either a hero or villain, along with a mentor to guide them and build them into stronger heroes or more infamous villains. Players venture around the large-scale cities and complete a number of missions in order to spread justice or malice across the land. The game is mostly player-versus-environment, but player-versus-player scenarios can still occur online.

Weekly Releases: 01/02/11

2010 is dead! Long live 2011! And now we begin to come back into the grind of things with gaming releases, right? Maybe not entirely.

Significant Releases

Lost in Shadow (Wii)

Developer: Hudson Entertainment (Deca Sports, Bomberman Series)
Publisher: Hudson Soft

Take the sidescroller genre, toss in some adventure elements, and throw it into the realm of the shadows, and you get Lost in Shadow. Players assume the role of a young boy whose shadow is separated from his body and tossed off of a large tower into the empty wilderness. A Sylph spirit helps you up and aids in your journey to reclaim your body and stop whatever evil is behind it. Players rely not on the world but the world's shadows for travels, so the location of light sources and the positions of objects in the real world are necessary to provide a path to cross through each area. Players will also have to fend off a number of monsters in the shadow realm to prevent from being nothing more than a faint memory. Adventure awaits in the shadows.

ilomilo (XBLA)

Developer: Southend Interactive (R-Type Dimensions, Lode Runner XBLA)
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios

With so many puzzle games out there, style is pivotal. Thankfully, ilomilo starts off the year in style quite well. The point of this game is to unite ilo and milo, two cute little characters who are separated by large, multi-dimensional and gravitational levels. When playing alone, players can alternate controls between the two, but when playing cooperatively, only one player can move at a time, although the other player can create a line to help. Through 49 levels, players must move blocks and climb around various types of cushiony cubes in order to make their way to bring the two back together.

Raskulls (XBLA) - Yeah it came out last week but...

Developer: Halfbrick (Monster Dash, Fruit Ninja)
Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios

Run, smash, and dash your way to the finish line! Raskulls is a platforming-racer title in which players choose a Raskull, a skeleton-headed being with which to race against up to three others across multiple worlds of insanity. The game offers a unique single player story mode with humor-filled cutscenes and special challenges strewn about, as well as the usual Grand Prix modes and large multiplayer modes, both online and offline. As players run and jump across terrain, they will have to smack colored blocks to make them disappear; any blocks of the same color attached to that smacked block will also disappear. There are also powerups and a special "Frenzy" mode which allows Raskulls to dash and attack at a much faster pace. Just watch out for the King's messages; he has a thing for brick-throwing.
