May 2010 NPD (Yeah it's June, but don't blame us...)

New sales data has arrived from NPD, the video game sales tracker for the US, but there are a few things to note beforehand.

NPD will now only release the sales figures for the top five games on the data. For free, of course. Subscriptions to the rest of the data is monumental in cost, so it might be best to leave things lie. Secondly, the sales data for NPD usually comes in the middle of the month following the month the sales data is from, but a delay caused May to be pushed to today.

Without further ado...

Hardware

PlayStation 3 154.5K
PSP 59.4K
Xbox 360 194.6K
Wii 334.8K
Nintendo DS 383.7K

It appears that Nintendo made it on top this month, earning more than half the total hardware sales. It also appears as though DS and PSP are down quite a bit from last year. Even so, PSP looks absolutely devastated. It better step its game up!

Software

1) RED DEAD REDEMPTION (360) 945.9K
2) RED DEAD REDEMPTION (PS3) 567.1K
3) SUPER MARIO GALAXY 2 563.9K
4) UFC 2010: UNDISPUTED (360) 221.1K
5) UFC 2010: UNDISPUTED (PS3) 192.3K
6) WII FIT PLUS W/BALANCE BOARD*
7) NEW SUPER MARIO BROS. Wii
8) ALAN WAKE
9) POKEMON SOULSILVER VERSION
10) SKATE 3 (360)
(new games in bold)

Red Dead Redemption blew the socks off the competition this month! It really is the Western version of Grand Theft Auto, but with more awesome and stuff. Of course, we should not forget about Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the other new games. UFC 2010 did pretty good to start, but both versions are down by quite a lot from 2009. Alan Wake and Skate 3 appear on the Top 10, but the sales data suggest they weren't exactly massive successes, either. Slow software I'd say.

And now, the wall of shame. These games released May and did not appear on the Top 10 (though they could appear just below):
Iron Man 2
Lost Planet 2
Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
Split/Second
Backbreaker
Blur
ModNation Racers

And that's that. June's not looking fabulous, either, for overall software sales as the Summer slump begins. Prep yourselves!
