NPD Sales Results: August 2010

Another month, another collection of sales data from the US. This time, we end the summer months with an expected Software chart and increasingly-interesting hardware listing.

HARDWARE

360 – 356,700
DS -342,700
Wii – 244,300
PS3 -226,000
PSP – 79,400

Holy moly, the PSP needs some help. Thankfully, with September's Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, we should see a boost. Meanwhile, the 360 reigns once again as the system of choice. This continues a streak of months in which the relaunched console has outsold the competition. Year-to-Date sales for the 360 are almost reaching that of the Wii, whose sales have shown stagnation despite this summer's Super Mario Galaxy 2. Then again, the 360 had a lot of hits this summer, as well.

SOFTWARE

1. Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360) -- 920,800
2. Madden NFL 11 (Electronic Arts, PlayStation 3) -- 893,600
3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo) - 124,600
4. Mafia II (Take 2 Interactive, Xbox 360) -- 121,600
5. New Super Mario Bros. (Nintendo, DS) -- 110,400
6. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Nintendo)
7. Mafia II (Take 2 Interactive, PS3)
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard, Xbox 360)
9. NCAA Football 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360)
10. Wii Fit Plus (Nintendo)

As predicted, the release of Madden NFL is once again the note of the month. Mafia II sold decently for being a half-month release, and it should return next month if it is lucky. Meanwhile, NCAA Football 11 remains barely, and Nintendo's ever-green Mario franchise remains constant in the sales charts. So, not everything is bad for Nintendo this month. Only Mafia II and Madden show off on PS3, and no PSP game in sight as expected. As for games not on the charts, Kane and Lynch 2 looks to be MIA. Can't win em all, Square-Enix.

SEPTEMBER PREDICTION

360 will dominate. With the new model and price drop combination, there is little stopping it short of dropping the price of its competition (hint hint). Meanwhile, Halo: Reach will top the charts software-wise, and Nintendo will most likely see Metroid: Other M on the charts, albeit in a more middling number comparatively. Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep will make an appearance, and I guarrantee we will see New Super Mario Bros. for the DS and maybe even Mario Kart DS, in light of the DSi hardware price drop.
